Our Fairfax Trails Awareness Project is designed to raise awareness of the large number of trails that run throughout Fairfax. Connecting various neighborhoods, Downtown, and Open Space, these trails run between streets, often making direct pedestrian routes possible, where the alternative is circuitous winding roads that take much longer. Fairfax is very lucky to have these trails, but unfortunately, many of them are neglected.

In 2006, we celebrated Earth Day by going to go to specific pedestrian
Right-of-Ways to clear brush and inspect the trails.
Trail clearing took place at the following locations:
- 212 Hillside & Power Lane
- 153 Hillside (Forest Terrace)
- 39 Meerna @ Forrest Terrace
- 152 Madrone (the end, via Cypress)
- 220 Ridgeway (Willow neighborhood)
In 2007 we gathered again on Earth Day to put in 79 steps on
a previously steep and slippery Pedestrian Trail from lower
to upper Tamalpais Road. Click here to see pictures from the 2007 event...
Our current effort is to mark trails with a number of signposts, which will be placed at the junctions of many of Fairfax's pedestrian trails. These signposts (similar to those seen on hiking trails in Open Space) will give the destinations, and names of trails.
Fairfax has over 100 of these trails, and so the marking project will take a while to carry out fully. If you are interested, we will be having a number of work days dedicated to making and placing signposts, as well as marking them with color- coded reflectors (indicating status).
To participate, please contact the Fairfax Volunteers by calling 456-5652, or sending email to fairfaxvolunteers@earthlink.net.
